This game lets you play two-on-two arcade basketball with players from all the NBA Jam teams. Gameplay is fast and action-packed, with few rules, no fouls, and deliberately unrealistic jamming. Players are rated on eight ability categories, from steals and blocks, to dunks and 3-pointers.
Up to four human players can take part, each always controlling a single player for their team, and AI for missing players. This allows for four players to face each other in teams of two, or for two players to team up against a third player with a CPU team-mate.
The Tournament Edition ups each team's roster to three players, and allows for substitutions between quarters. Shoving players now results in injuries, which lower a player's stats; encouraging you to sub them out and let them recover. Aside from the usual secret characters and cheat modes, the T.E. also includes four new additions you can individually enable from the special options menu: * "Hot Spots" are randomized zones on the court that reward extra points (up to a 9-point shot!) for making a basket while standing within them.
Powerup icons appear randomly, and convey temporary arcade-like benefits when picked up. Some examples are instant "on-fire," enhanced 3-point accuracy, monster dunks from anywhere on the court, or a bomb that knocks all other players to the ground.
"Juice Mode" increases the speed of the game up to 4x.
"Tournament Mode" disables all other modes, special characters, and cheats, and challenges you to defeat all the NBA Jam teams to unlock extra players (2 extra players for almost every team). Winning Tournament Mode also unlocks a higher CPU difficulty level.

How to Play
Introduction
Prepare for full-scale competition with a jam-packed practice session! Hit the hardwood with slams and turbo-charged jams! Take the three-point shot from the far end of the court, or Jam™ it home from under your opponent's net!
You think you know the game? Think again! With NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™ you're entering a whole new world of rim-ramming, hard-hitting hoop excitement!
Before You Lace Up the Shoes
Loading
1. Make sure the power switch is OFF.
2. Insert the NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™ Game Pak as described in your Nintendo® Game Boy® instruction booklet.
3. Turn the power switch ON.
NOTE: NBA JAM TOURNAMENT EDITION™ is a one player game only.
Title Screen Options
When the NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™ title screen appears, you have three choices: START GAME, PRACTICE or set OPTIONS. Use UP or DOWN on the CONTROL PAD to highlight your choice. Press the START BUTTON to select it.
You may choose to start play as any one of the four players on screen in positions 1, 2, 3 or 4. Use LEFT or RIGHT on the CONTROL PAD to highlight your choice.
Practice Mode
PRACTICE mode, exclusive to NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™, enables you to work extensively on perfecting your passing and jamming skills before you take them into competition!
PRACTICE mode allows you to set up specialty drills, and to review and refine your monster jams before you team up against the NBA®'s best!
Options Mode
OPTIONS mode lets you customize your NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™ game play. (For additional details on this mode, see CUSTOMIZE THE GAME.)
Starting a Game
To begin playing NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™, press the START BUTTON. You can choose to play as either the home or visiting team. The home team (players 3 and 4) plays right to left on screen, while the visitors (default setting, players 1 and 2) play left to right. Use the CONTROL PAD and START BUTTON to choose.
You will then be asked if you wish to enter your initials for record-keeping. Use the CONTROL PAD and the START BUTTON to choose. If “yes” is selected, you will then be asked to enter your initials. Use the CONTROL PAD to move the cursor to the desired letter, then press the A, B or START BUTTONS to select. Then you will be asked to enter a password in the same manner. If you are playing for the first time, or do not have a password, you can skip this step.
Choosing Your Team
You will next be asked to choose your NBA® team. Use the CONTROL PAD to highlight the team you want. Each team is comprised of two players selected from a roster of three or more NBA® teammates.
In addition to the 27 NBA® teams, NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™ features a rookie team made up entirely of NBA® newcomers. Rookie team games do NOT count towards a season.
Player Statistics
Notice that for every player featured in NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™, a field of statistical ability rankings appears at the bottom of the screen below the player's portrait. These figures rate each player on a scale of 0 to 9 in eight important playing categories.

Attribute Definitions
•
SPEED: How peppy the player is.
•
3 PT: Rates how well the player hits the hoop from "downtown".
•
DUNK: A ranking of what kind of Jammer the player is.
•
PASS: How accurate a player's passing game is.
•
POWER: The power of a player is important in terms of both his strength and his ability to withstand injury.
•
STEAL: Rates a player's ability to strip the ball from opponents.
•
BLOCK: How good is this player at rejecting and deflecting attempted shots? The block rating tells no lie!
•
CLUTCH: Tells you whether this player comes through when you need him most, or if El Foldo is more his style.
Once you've highlighted your team, use the B or A BUTTON to scroll through the available players on that team, then press the START BUTTON to lock in your choice.
Customize the Game!
The options screen provides you with a wide variety of ways to affect game play:
•
TIMER SPEED: The speed of the clock may be set from 1 (slow) to 5 (fast).
•
DRONE DIFFICULTY: The competitive intelligence of your computer controlled opponents may be set from 1 (easy) to 5 (hard).
•
TAG MODE: NBA® JAM™ TOURNAMENT EDITION™ allows you to select how you wish to control your teammate. OFF is the default. As in the arcade version, you control one player the entire game, and the computer controls your teammate. ON enables you to control both the ball-handling and the movement of whichever player on your team has the ball. In other words, you pass off control when you pass off the ball. The "tag" occurs when your teammate gains possession, so if a pass is intercepted, you retain control of the player who passed.

COMPUTER ASSISTANCE: Set ON or OFF. When ON, this option will cause the computer to make sure that games remain close by cooling off
Tips & Maps
Password System
The game stores player records, rankings, and winning percentages. A new password is given after each game, but the Game Boy automatically tracks your record while on, allowing play without re-entering passwords. Your password works on other Game Boys, letting you bring your record anywhere.
Teams
The game features teams from the Western Conference (Golden State, LA Clippers, LA Lakers, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle, Sacramento, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Minnesota, San Antonio, Utah) and Rookies (Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Indiana, Milwaukee).
Player Stats
Player stats include Speed, Power, 3-point shooting, Steal, Dunks, and Block.

Practice turbo-charged jamming and slamming to duplicate breathtaking moves.
