MX 2002 featuring Ricky Carmichael is a unique adaptation of the console title for the Game Boy Advance. The game features its own selection of tracks and riders, simplified controls and a graphics engine adapted to the handheld platform.
The game allows players to participate in either motocross racing or trick-based freestyle competition. Both modes can be selected in either a full Championship or a Quick Race. Racing is divided into 250cc and 125cc classes, each with its own selection of professional riders. The game also features a US Open mode, which offers a special track not available in the other modes.
Races consist of several heats, with the first three riders in the first two heats advancing to the finals. A third "last chance" heat is required for riders who finish third or fourth to advance. Freestyle competitions involve a two-minute solo run, with the rider earning the most points declared the winner.
The game's graphics employ textured-mapped polygonal graphics for the track and 2D bitmaps for the riders. The camera is always behind the player, and controls are relatively simple compared to the console version. Players can set weather conditions, choose race lengths, and fine-tune their bike in a tune-up mode.
The game also features a championship mode, where players can save their progress via passwords.
