After several years of restoring Lord British to power in Britannia, the Avatar is captured by demonic creatures and rescued by his friends Iolo, Shamino, and Dupre.
The Avatar soon discovers that his abductors were gargoyles, a mysterious race that has invaded Britannia and occupied its shrines. As he embarks on a quest to liberate the land, the Avatar uncovers more about the gargoyles' motives and realizes his duty is to achieve peace between the two races.
Ultima VI: The False Prophet features a fully continuous world, where locations are seamlessly connected, creating an open environment. Compared to previous games in the series, this installment focuses more on quests and exploration than combat. Battles now occur during exploration, without separate screens or transitions.
The game's interface has been revamped, combining key-bound commands with selectable icons and mouse-based interaction. The world is more detailed, with numerous objects that can be manipulated or added to the inventory. Conversations are extended, with a wider selection of topics, including personal ones unique to specific characters.
