After the government collapses in an unnamed African country, a civil war erupts between two factions, UFLL and APR, leaving citizens trapped in their homes as death reigns on the streets. The player is sent to find and eliminate "The Jackal", a man who has been hiding from federal agencies with modern weapons despite a banned shipment. Within a 50 square kilometer area, the player must fight malaria while searching for "The Jackal" and surviving the disease. To do so, they need access to guns, vehicles, and medication. The player can complete missions to gain reputation, unlock better gear, and earn diamonds as currency. However, some enemies and locations only become relevant when triggered by specific quests.
The game allows players to explore freely, but some actions will be rendered useless until the right quest is completed. Weapons picked up from dead enemies may be damaged and cannot be used. The player can carry one of each gun type and vehicles take damage before stopping. They can also use bus stops or safe houses to traverse the country without being attacked.
The player isn't alone in their mission. Other mercenaries can join them, providing tips, combat support, or expanding the scope of missions for greater rewards. These allies wait at safe houses unlocked by clearing enemies and used for ammo storage, save game, and fast-forwarding time.
Besides single-player campaign, Far Cry 2 features a multiplayer mode for up to 16 players in various game modes, including Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond, and Insurgence. Each mode uses a class-based system with six classes and unique weapon load-outs. The different versions are identical except for save systems, where Windows version allows saving at any point while console versions prompt to save at checkpoints.
