The government in an unnamed African country has collapsed and the whole land has plummeted into a civil war between the UFLL (United Front for Liberation and Labour) and the APR (Alliance for Popular Resistance). Those who were not able to leave the land now hide in their homes while in the streets death reigns the day. But as bad as it has been, now it is even worse with shipments of modern weapons entering the land despite a weapons embargo. The player is sent into the country to find and eliminate "The Jackal", who has been hiding from federal agencies for years.
The game puts the player in a 50 square kilometers big area where they can do what they want, with only the goal of finding and killing "The Jackal" and surviving malaria. To achieve this, they need weapons, vehicles, and pills to manage their condition. Missions like escorting a weapons shipment or killing the head of police from the factions increase their reputation (access to better gear and missions) and earn them diamonds as currency.
Weapons can be picked up from dead enemies but may not work properly due to wear and tear. The player can only carry one of each type of weapon, while vehicles take damage and stop working after a while. However, they can be repaired by the player. If no vehicle is available, the player can use bus stops to traverse the country without being attacked.
The player is not alone in their mission; other mercenaries roam the bars and lands, and if the player completes missions for them, they will assist in future missions. These allies are stored in safe houses unlocked by clearing enemies from those areas, also used for ammo storage, saving games, and fast-forwarding time.
Besides single-player campaign, the game features a multiplayer mode for up to 16 players in Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond, and Insurgence modes. In Insurgence, two teams fight over capture points on the map, with control of all points winning the round. Each game mode uses a class-based system with six classes and different weapon load-outs.
The console versions (PlayStation 3) have similar features to the Windows version, except for the save system, which allows saving at any point in the Windows version but prompts saving at checkpoints on consoles.
