The government in an unnamed African country has collapsed and the whole land has plummeted into a civil war between two central factions: UFLL (United Front for Liberation and Labour) and APR (Alliance for Popular Resistance). Those who couldn't leave the land now hide at home while in the streets death is common. With modern weapons shipments entering the land despite a weapons embargo, things have worsened. The player is sent to find and eliminate "The Jackal", known only by this name, who has been hiding from federal agencies for years. After infection with malaria, the player must fight two enemies at once.
The game drops the player into a 50 square kilometers area where they can do what they want, with only one goal: find and kill "The Jackal" and survive the disease. To achieve this, the player needs weapons, vehicles, and medicine to manage malaria. Missions like escorting weapon shipments or killing police heads from factions will increase the player's reputation (access to better gear and missions) and provide diamonds as currency. The world can be freely explored, but certain enemies or locations may only become relevant after completing a quest.
Weapons can be picked up from dead enemies, but they're often damaged and may jam at inconvenient times. If a weapon is too badly damaged, it will break. The player can carry one of each type of four weapons categories. Vehicles take damage and stop working after a while, but can be repaired by the player. Without a vehicle, the player can use bus stops to travel through the land safely.
The player isn't alone on their shooting spree; other mercenaries roam the bars and lands, offering help with missions if they're aided. These allies will wait in safe houses unlocked by clearing them of enemies, serving as ammo storage, saving points, or fast-forwarding time to a certain day. The game also features multiplayer mode for up to 16 players in four game modes: Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond, and Insurgence.
The different versions are identical, including the editor, except for the save system. In the Windows version, the game can be saved at any point, while console versions prompt to save at checkpoints.
