The sequel to EA Sports Active , EA Sports Active 2 adds new exercises, workout plans, and brings the series to the Wii, Xbox360, and PS3. The major inclusion is a wireless heart rate monitor worn on the arm, which displays the player's heart rate and provides encouragement to faster rates.
The game's major change from the previous title is to move away from using handheld sensors, instead relying on wireless sensors worn on the arm and leg for "Total Body Tracking" on PS3 and Wii versions, or just the heart rate monitor and Kinect on Xbox360. This allows players to use hand weights and perform floor exercises freely.
Players can choose from three week or nine week programs, which are rigidly guided systems that track progress through the selected weeks. The game also encourages users to fill out an in-game journal, tracking eating habits, weight, hours slept, and additional activity outside of the program. Users can customize separate workouts or deselect specific exercises in a preset session.
Workout sessions include various exercises such as running in place, squats, jumping in place, weight raises, and floor exercises like push-ups and sit-ups. Minigames like basketball, mountain biking, and boxing are also used as part of the exercises. The game features online multiplayer on Xbox360 and PS3, allowing two players to perform workouts together.
The Wii version is limited to one player, while the 360 supports up to two players locally. The 360 and PS3 versions include an online tracking system, where players can track and share their workout progress from the web. Players can also join a "Workout Group," contributing to a total group goal.
