The Speed game is an evolution of the gameplay in the Need for Speed series. The career mode offers complete freedom in a city with a story mode supported by FMV cutscenes, as featured in previous games. The city has been divided into different territories, controlled by gangs, and you are either invited or challenged to race in the sections and claim them as your own.
The gameplay focuses on tuning and sculpting your car, with many police pursuits still present. You can visit garages and car lots to make improvements to your vehicle, unlocking enhancements gradually over time. There are about 40 cars to unlock, including new muscle cars such as the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger. The PC, Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions offer online multiplayer, allowing up to eight players to race together.
The crew feature allows you to assign roles to your racers, hiring supporting characters to help you win races. These roles include drafters, scouts, and blockers, which provide different benefits in the heat of competition. The game also features new modes, including Pursuit Tag and Pursuit Knockout, where you can drive cooperatively with up to four players.
