Hyrule Warriors is a hack and slash action game set in The Legend of Zelda universe, with gameplay similar to Tecmo Koei Games' Dynasty Warriors series. The game is set in the Zelda world of Hyrule and starts with Link as a Hylian soldier trainee. The evil presence Ganondorf was once defeated, but his soul was split into four fragments hidden in different places. Even though Ganondorf was defeated, he influenced the sorceress Cia to open portals where monsters can pass through.
In Hyrule Warriors , Link travels through different environments linked together on a world map, fighting to meet victory conditions. Other characters are gradually unlocked as well, allowing players to play as Impa, Sheik, Zeda, Lana, Darunia, or Fi. The gameplay is based on fast combos, often attacking multiple enemies at once, while incoming attacks can be avoided through dodge rolls.
The game features a global experience level used to level up and defeat enemies adds to it. Defeating enemies also fills up a yellow attack gauge, which when full, unleashes a powerful attack damaging over 50 enemies at once. Picked-up magic jars fill up a green magic gauge, allowing players to activate focus spirit.
Many large opponents have weak points, and once exposed, a weak point meter appears above an enemy, making it vulnerable to a powerful move. Items to collect during battles include rupees, bonuses for magic, health, items, weapon fragments, vases, materials, and temporary item power-ups from enemies.
The maps are generally very large with multiple areas to control, and the main character almost never fights alone. Goals and objectives are crucial to move around quickly, including capturing areas, defeating bosses, and protecting certain characters.
Levels often contain keeps that spawn endless reinforcements when under enemy control. By defeating enemies in such an area, a keep meter can be reduced, causing a keep boss to appear. The game also features outposts with a similar mechanic and armies with a morale system shown through color.
Hyrule Warriors supports local cooperative multiplayer and off-TV play for single-player games, as well as sharing certain achievements in the Miiverse.
