Halo 2 is the sequel to Halo: Combat Evolved , where Spartan-117, also known as the Master Chief, returns to Earth to face an unexpected threat from the Covenant. Despite their usual strength, the Covenant's fleet is surprisingly small and needs the Chief's help to uncover the mystery behind this anomaly.
Meanwhile, a high-ranking Elite who commanded the fleet at the Halo construct has been condemned by the High Prophets for his role in the ring's destruction, but they give him another chance as an Arbiter, tasked with carrying out impossible missions and dealing with internal conflicts within the Covenant. The player controls both the Chief and the Arbiter in Halo 2 , a first-person shooter with similar gameplay to the first game. Key features include the ability to carry two weapons at once, an energy shield that recharges during firefights, AI-controlled teammates, and vehicle sections.
New features include double-wielding certain weapons, melee attacks, and grenade throwing. The human projectile arsenal has been expanded with new additions such as a pistol, shotgun, SMG, battle rifle, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, and more.
Vehicle options have also increased, including the return of Warthog jeeps, Scorpion tanks, Banshee fliers, Ghost gliders, and Wraith tanks for both humans and Covenant. A new vehicle, the Covenant Spectre, offers a comparable experience to the Warthog. The multiplayer component has been greatly expanded on Xbox, with support for Xbox Live, split-screen, and system link. The campaign can be played by two players on split-screen, and competitive game types include Slayer, Team Slayer, Capture the Flag, Assault, Territories, Oddball, and more, each with variants and customization options. Players can choose from Spartan and Covenant Elite skins in multiplayer, and the PC version comes with a map editor, adding to the game's replay value.
