Continuing the tradition of adapting known franchises with visuals based on LEGO, this game takes on the LEGO Batman: The Videogame universe. The basic concept is the same, with characters and objects built up using LEGO blocks, but here shown against surroundings drawn in a regular fashion. Most of the environments are side-scrolling with a fixed camera perspective, but in 3D with quite some depth.
The game's story takes place when a cast of villains escapes from Arkham Asylum and wreaks havoc on Gotham City. The player must control LEGO Batman: The Videogame 's protagonist and his sidekick Robin to take down the enemies in brawler gameplay. The environments can be explored using various gadgets, and players can switch between characters at any time.
The game features a mix of action and puzzle elements, with some missions requiring players to solve small puzzles or build structures with LEGO blocks. After completing a mission in story mode, it becomes available in a separate free play mode. The villainous cast, including Poison Ivy and the Joker, have their own sections in the game, showcasing their plans prior to facing off against LEGO Batman: The Videogame 's heroes.
The game also features co-op multiplayer options for home console and Windows versions, allowing for drop-in/drop-out play. However, the PSP release lacks any multiplayer feature.
