Ace Combat: Joint Assault takes a new approach by leaving the fictional worlds of previous installments and entering the real world. The missions take place over London, Tokyo and San Francisco, featuring fictional elements such as huge flying fortresses. The player assumes the role of a young pilot who joins Martinez Security and soon finds themselves fighting the Valahia, some sort of bandits threatening whole cities. However, the plot quickly becomes more complicated.
The gameplay is mostly identical to its predecessor on PSP. The player controls combat airplanes in third-person or from a cockpit view, fighting other airplanes and big flying enemies while dodging their missiles. After completing missions, which mainly consist of killing a certain number of enemies or boss fights, the player receives money that can be used to unlock more airplanes or upgrades. These aircraft are based on real-life models and have advantages and disadvantages, such as some being more suitable against flying enemies or bombers effective against ground targets.
The only major new features include an "enhanced combat view" which provides a closer visual look at enemies during modern air combat. The game also introduces co-op mode, allowing players to complete the campaign with other players. In this mode, up to four players are divided into two teams, taking advantage of the branching missions.
