Guitar Hero Live is an entry in the Guitar Hero series and a reboot of the franchise after the hiatus following Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock in 2010. The core concept is identical: players use a plastic guitar peripheral to play the guitar sections of songs by following the cues on the screen and pressing the matching buttons on the instrument in time. Unlike the contemporary Rock Band 4 , there is no backwards compatibility with instruments of content from earlier games. The largest difference compared to earlier titles is in the presentation. In the Guitar Hero Live mode, each song is now played from the perspective of the guitarist during a real-world concert setting using full motion video footage.
The game offers various gameplay modes, including Quick Play, where players can choose from existing tracks and play in different difficulty levels. The instrument has been redesigned with six fret buttons instead of three, lined up in two rows of three buttons, and a strum bar. Players can interact with the screen by tilting the controller or pressing specific buttons to unleash Hero Power, which can be collected by correctly playing a series of blue notes on a track.
The game is divided into two main parts: offline Guitar Hero Live mode, where players become a guitarist for different fictitious bands playing existing tracks from popular bands on a number of fictitious festivals, and online Guitar Hero TV mode, which offers multiple channels streaming songs all day long. Players can compete with others worldwide, unlock player card skins, and access Premium channel with rotating challenges and asynchronous multiplayer.
Guitar Hero Live was released for the Xbox 360 console on October 20, 2015, and is available for mobile iOS platform as a free download with in-app purchases. The game's retail package includes one or two guitar controllers and offers multiple difficulty levels, including casual, starter, advanced, and expert.
The game contains 42 different tracks across various genres, such as rock, alternative, metal, rap, and dubstep, which can be unlocked by completing songs in the offline mode. Players can also purchase play coins to unlock specific songs in the online mode, which is tracked for performance scores and compared with others worldwide.
