Monster Maker is an RPG that takes its inspiration from the 1988 Card Game. As such, the game's monsters, non-playable characters (NPCs), and even destinations on the world map are all represented using a playing card aesthetic. The gameplay itself is similar to other RPGs of its time, including Dragon Quest.
Players start by choosing one of four characters to play as, and then must purchase equipment for their character before setting off on their adventure. Along the way, they can recruit additional party members at the inn. When exploring new destinations, the player controls a top-down perspective where they "flip over" facedown cards representing unexplored areas of that location. Occasionally, monsters will be shown on the map, and encountering them opens up a first-person RPG battle menu. Defeating these monsters earns gold and experience points, but beware - there's a limit of three monster cards on the screen at any one time, and encounters can include more monsters who'll take the place of defeated ones.
