Mario Party 7 takes the Mario Party series in a new direction with its cruise-themed setting. The story revolves around Mario and his friends taking a break from their usual adventures to enjoy some time on the high seas. However, their relaxing getaway is soon disrupted by Bowser's arrival, causing chaos and destruction throughout the ship. To restore peace to the vessel, the gang decides to play a game of Mario Party, which becomes the only thing that can salvage what's left of the cruise.
The gameplay in Mario Party 7 is similar to previous entries in the series, with a mix of board game-style movement and mini-game challenges. Players compete to collect as many stars as possible by navigating the game board and participating in one of 86 available mini-games. The winner of each mini-game earns coins, which can be used to purchase stars. These mini-games can be played individually or in teams, adding a fun social element to the game.
The game board features various types of spaces, including Bowser's mini-games, hidden bonuses, and orb-purchasing opportunities. Most mini-games are controlled using the GameCube controller, but a microphone is included for several voice-activated challenges. The game also includes the usual single-player and multiplayer modes, with a new twist: up to eight players can now compete in the same game, requiring two players to share each controller.
