Gameplay involves building minifigures using the game's provided instructions and placing them on a USB portal to bring them to life in the game. Players can then use these figures to play through levels, each with its own unique storyline and objectives. The game also features open-world hubs known as 'Adventure Worlds', where players can complete puzzles, races, and quests to earn collectable Gold Bricks.

Players can explore multiple universes, representing the various franchises available for purchase with the game, which form part of an overarching plot. Expansion packs are also available in the form of 'Level Packs', which introduce new characters and downloadable levels.
