Assassin's Creed III is a historical open world action-adventure game with a focus on stealth. The game follows the story of Desmond Miles, who travels through his ancestral memories using the Animus virtual reality machine. He finds himself in Colonial America, during the American Revolution, where he becomes involved in the Assassin-Templar war.
The game is set from 1753 to 1783 and follows two main protagonists: Haytham Kenway, a Templar, and Connor, his son who later becomes an Assassin. The player experiences both characters' storylines, from Haytham's journey to America after killing an Assassin in the London Opera to Connor's training as an Assassin.
The open world environment is vast and allows for exploration and discovery of optional missions and tasks. The fighting system uses melee and ranged weapons with various actions to disarm, attack, parry, fire, and assassinate. The free running movement has been modified to tie the different actions into a fluid motion.
Next to the main storyline, there are various optional missions and tasks that can be found by exploring the environment. The game also introduces hunting and trapping animals in the wilderness to sell the skin, building the settlement Davenport Homestead, and participating in naval campaigns on the Eastern seaboard.
The game includes a three-tier notoriety system, where becoming incognito involves running away and hiding, but also tearing down wanted posters and bribing town criers. All computer-controlled characters have their own routines, which are influenced by the weather as well, with a day-and-night and seasons cycle.
Multiplayer includes 12 different game modes and is presented as an entertainment product of Abstergo Industries. The cooperative Wolfpack mode allows up to four players to work together to kill NPCs with a time limit. The Domination team mode uses the Animus game console to capture areas of a virtual map and protect them from the opposite team.
The Wii U version introduces new features, such as using the gamepad to display the in-game map and equip different weapons quickly.
