Assassin's Creed III is a historical open world action-adventure game with a focus on stealth. The game is set in Colonial America, before, during and after the American Revolution from 1753 to 1783. Desmond Miles travels with father William and companions Rebecca and Shaun to a cave in New York where they find a temple made by the members of the First Civilization. The main protagonist for this game is Ratonhnhaké:ton (Connor), a member of the Mohawk tribe, introduced after a substantial portion of the game. The player experiences the gameplay of various events, including the journey on the boat to Boston and the arrival in the city where Connor's father Haytham Kenway meets his wife Kaniehti:ton.
Next to the main storyline there are various optional missions and tasks that can be found by exploring the environment. The fighting system uses melee and ranged weapons with various actions to disarm, attack, parry, fire and assassinate based on the equipped weapon.
Hunting and trapping animals in the wilderness is a new part of the game, selling skin for raw goods and crafted items that form a local economy. Building the settlement Davenport Homestead brings raw materials and facilities that can be used to craft. The player can decide to sell them through land caravans or via sea convoys.
Naval campaigns are played on the Eastern seaboard with Connor commanding the ship through sails, cover and cannons in full naval combat. Three historical board games can also be played on the ship, in the cities or at the Homestead: Bowls, Morris and Fanorona.
The game contains various challenges, such as hunting trinkets, collecting almanac pages and feathers, delivering letters, performing assassination contracts and synchronizing viewpoints. Liberation of districts reduces taxes for Homestead convoys and recruiting companions can be useful in times of need.
Multiplayer includes 12 different game modes, including cooperative Wolfpack mode where up to four players work together through 25 stages to kill NPCs with a time limit, and Domination team mode where the Animus console is used to capture areas of a virtual map.
The Wii U version uses the gamepad to display the in-game map and players can also use it to equip different weapons quickly.
