Assassin's Creed III is a historical open world action-adventure game with a focus on stealth. The game follows the story of Desmond Miles, who travels with his father William and companions Rebecca and Shaun to a cave in New York where they find a temple made by the members of the First Civilization. Using the Apple of Eden, Desmond activates a large part of the equipment that was built to help protect Earth against a solar flare. However, Desmond falls into a fugue state and is brought into Animus, the virtual reality machine that allows him to experience his ancestral memories.
The game is set in Colonial America, from 1753 to 1783, where the player experiences the life of Ratonhnhaké:ton (Connor), a Native American who becomes an assassin. Connor's storyline is intertwined with Desmond's present-day struggles. The game also features optional missions and tasks that can be found by exploring the environment.
The fighting system uses melee and ranged weapons, with various actions to disarm, attack, parry, fire, and assassinate based on the equipped weapon. Counter attacks are new and shown in slow motion to make room to strike. The game also introduces hunting and trapping animals in the wilderness to sell the skin, building a settlement called Davenport Homestead, and participating in naval campaigns.
Next to the main storyline, there are various optional missions and tasks that can be unlocked by joining clubs such as hunting, brawling, and thieving. These each offer optional goals in different tiers. The game also features multiplayer modes, including cooperative Wolfpack mode where up to four players work together to kill NPCs with a time limit.
Additional challenges are also available, including synchronizing viewpoints, delivering letters, performing assassination contracts, and more. Each of the three large environments (Boston, Frontier, New York) needs to be freed from Templar influence by liberating districts. The game also features a local economy where the player can decide to sell goods through land caravans or via sea convoys.
Overall, Assassin's Creed III offers a rich and immersive gameplay experience with a strong focus on storytelling, exploration, and combat.
