Super Robot Wars V is a standalone title in the long-running series, marking the 25th anniversary of the Super Robot Wars franchise. This entry also marks the first appearance of Space Battleship Yamato in the SRW series, which is notable for not actually having any robots.
The game follows the story of two pilots, Souji Murakumo and Chitose Kisaragi, as they embark on a journey across space and dimensions. Along the way, they team up with new allies and face off against enemies in various missions. The player's choices can affect the storyline, making for a unique experience each time.
The gameplay is divided into Base mode, Adventure mode, Scenario mode, and more. In Adventure mode, the player watches the story unfold, while in Scenario mode, they deploy their forces to defeat opponents or achieve objectives. Base mode allows players to upgrade their units using currency earned in Scenario mode.
Pilots level up with experience, gaining stats and learning new Spirits that can boost abilities. Defeating enemies awards Tactical Points, which can be used to buy Skill Programs or Power Parts. Money can be spent on customizing mecha, while some pilots can be swapped between units within their respective franchises.
Scenario mode allows players to select battleships and units, place them on the map, and complete objectives. New features include the ability to use Spirit abilities at any time and the option to import music files for individual unit attacks.
The game also includes optional objectives that provide extra rewards, and a difficulty adjustment system that changes based on SR point progress. Players can choose from Beginner mode, which removes some benefits, or play on Standard difficulty with the full SR point reward.
