Game Guide
Extracted from the original game manual
This RPG follows a young boy named Marche and his friends in St. Ivalice after they discover a magical book that alters their reality. Players explore various towns and cities to accept missions from pubs, manage resources in shops, and raise captured monsters. The gameplay involves strategic adventuring while navigating legal restrictions that can result in imprisonment if broken during battle.
Story
Introduction
Our story begins soon after a young boy named Marche moves to the country town of St. Ivalice. Marche's family has had a difficult past, and it is all he can do to adjust to country life with the help of his new friends.
These friends include Mewt, a mature but timid boy who is often picked on, and Ritz, a stellar student whose strong-willed nature has made her unpopular at school. They are friends, though they barely know more than each other's names.
But one day, the three of them come across an ancient magical book, and St. Ivalice changes forever.
The Streets of Ivalice
Various establishments can be found in the towns and cities of Ivalice.
Pubs
Go to pubs to accept requests, or "missions," from the citizens of Ivalice. You can also cancel previously accepted missions in pubs.
Pubs are a good place to hear the current rumors in Ivalice. The rumor mill is always churning, so come back often. You'll find that the pubs are vital to successful adventuring.
The menu options available in pubs include:
β’
Sit down, take a load off
β’
Rumors
β’
Missions
β’
Quit Mission
β’
Leave
Shops
Shops sell most of the equipment and items you need for adventuring. Every shop is different, so be sure to shop around.
Prison
If you break one of the laws of Ivalice governing the rules of battle, you might end up in prison. A unit is sent to prison if it breaks a law and is expelled from the current engagement.
You can either pay gil to secure the release of imprisoned units or get them a pardon.
The menu options available in prison include:
β’
Release
β’
Pardon
β’
Leave
The Monster Bank
Monsters taken with the Capture command are kept at the Monster Bank. Visit here to check on your monsters and help raise them.
The Card Keeper
Visit the Card Keeper to trade "law cards," items that are used to nullify laws. You can also talk to the proprietor.

How to Play
Starting a Game
When you turn on the power, a demo will automatically play. After the demo finishes, the title screen will appear with three choices:
β’
New Game: Start from the very beginning of the story.
β’
Saved Game: Resume play from saved data. If you saved a game in the middle of a battle, "Resume Battle" gets you back into the action.
β’
Color Mode: Choose the color mode best suited to your system.
Press START while on the world map to open the system menu. This menu allows you to save games and load saved data. Pressing START during a battle opens the system menu with the option to Save Now, which saves the current battle. Use Resume Battle to pick up where you left off.
Saving while on the world map will erase any previous Save Now data. Note that you can use Resume Battle to resume a given saved battle only once.
How to Play
A strange book has changed the world of Ivalice. The story begins in the town of Cyril, where you join an organization called a clan. Working with fellow clan members, you will take on various missions.
You can sign up for missions at any pub found in most locations on the world map. Complete the missions to unravel the many mysteries of Ivalice. While many missions may appear separate from the main story, all adventures bring you closer to understanding what is going on in the game world.
Kupol! Henceforth, we shall be called "Clan Nutsy"!
Missions and the Story
The story of *Final Fantasy Tactics Advance* is told entirely through missions. Complete missions to unravel the mysteries of Ivalice!
Missions can be accepted at pubs in every city area. Speak to the pubmaster and select Missions to see a list of available missions. After selecting a mission and reviewing the conditions, you can accept it by paying the information fee.
Leaving some missions for a certain amount of time without completing them counts as a failure. Be careful with your time!
Kupo? You find any good missions, kupo?
There are four types of missions, each with their own conditions for successful completion. By completing a mission, you can earn experience points, special items, and gil.
Types of Missions
β’
Regular Missions: Marked with a sword symbol ("battle icon"). You must go to the designated area and win an engagement. Most main story missions and mysteries of Ivalice are classified this way.
β’
Non-battle Missions: Marked with a book symbol ("non-battle icon"). You must select and deploy one of your units. When conditions are met, the deployed unit returns and reports. The mission might end in failure depending on the unit sent. Deployed units cannot participate in other missions or engagements.
β’
Encounter Missions: Marked with an opposing clan symbol ("encounter icon"). An opposing clan's symbol appears on the world map. Cross paths with this symbol to begin. Most result in a battle, but sometimes you can negotiate your way out of a fight.
β’
Free-Area Missions: Marked with a flag symbol ("turf icon"). Some require you to go to a specified area, while others require you to deploy a unit.
Quest Items
When you accept a mission, you have the option of bringing along special mission items. The items you bring can affect the outcome, so understand the nature of your items and the mission before going.
Some missions are not available unless you have the required mission item. Mission items are mainly obtained as rewards for completing a mission.
β’
You can sell mission items or trade them with friends using a Game Link cable.
β’
Some items cannot be replaced once given away.
β’
Use the Clan command on the world map menu to check your mission items.
Clans
Soon after Ivalice changes, you will meet the helpful moogle Montblanc and join a "clan" organization. The clans make their living by accepting missions and requests from the citizens of Ivalice.
A clan advances by accepting and completing missions. "Clan level" and "clan skills" are marks of advancement, and clans can be awarded titles depending on their actions.
Select Clan on the world map menu to display the clan menu. The name, title, and level are shown for the player's clan.
Clan Skills
Clan skills indicate a clan's advancement. There are eight types of skills that improve when you complete missions.
β’
Some missions can only be accepted when your clan has a certain level in a particular skill.
β’
Clan skill levels can affect the results of a non-battle mission.

Your Party
You can prepare units for missions and engagements by checking status, equipping weapons and armor, changing jobs, and setting abilities in the party menu.
Units have different races, jobs, and abilities. These characteristics can be customized before missions.
Races
Five races live in Ivalice, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, basic stats, and preferred jobs and abilities.
Jobs
Units of every race can improve power by advancing in a job. Every race has a preferred job, so two units of differing races with the same job will perform differently.
Customizing Units
Equip Items
Items such as weapons, armor, and accessories may be equipped using the party menu.

Tips & Maps
Abilities
Each job has unique battle techniques called abilities, which can be learned by equipping specific armor and weapons and mastering them through battle.
Changing Jobs
Units can change jobs to diversify their abilities, with more advanced units having access to a wider variety of jobs.
Using Abilities
New abilities must be learned by equipping the proper items, and removing the equipment causes the unit to lose the ability unless it has been mastered.
Discovering New Jobs
Mastering the abilities included with each job increases the number of available jobs, including powerful high-level options.
Mastering Abilities
Abilities are mastered by gaining Ability Points (AP) through missions and battles; once mastered, abilities can be used without the specific equipment and persist after changing jobs.
Action Abilities
These are general abilities used directly by units in battle.
Reaction Abilities
When set, these abilities cause a unit to automatically respond to specific events in battle.
Support Abilities
These abilities provide a constant bonus to a unit throughout the duration of a battle.
Combo Abilities
These abilities enable combo attacks in battle using the Combo command, allowing allies to join in if they have the same ability set.
Status Ailments
Attacks can cause various status conditions such as Blind, Doom, Sleep, Silence, Charm, Immobilize, Disable, Addle, Confuse, Frog, Poison, Petrify, Berserk, and Zombie, which affect unit performance and require specific cures.
Turn Order
This command shows the order in which all participating units act during a battle, with enemy units displayed in orange.
Mission
This command displays the victory conditions for the current mission along with mission details.
Laws / Law Cards
This command shows the applicable laws for the current engagement and lists all law cards held by the player.
Options
This command allows the player to set various game options.
Flee
This command allows a unit to flee from the current engagement, though the mission is considered a failure and not all battles allow fleeing.
Save Now
This command suspends the battle and saves the current game, allowing the player to resume the battle later.
The Judgment System
The world of Ivalice is governed by laws that determine rules of engagement and judges who enforce them by punishing rule-breakers.
The Laws of Ivalice
Laws forbid certain actions while rewarding others, and they can be viewed on the world map where applicable laws for different areas are displayed.
Law Cards
Law cards are used to counter the laws of Ivalice; antilaw cards nullify current laws, while normal cards create new laws in open slots during battle.
The Judges
Judges preside over engagements and enforce laws, issuing yellow cards as warnings and red cards for immediate removal from battle.
Judge Points
Units gain Judge Points (JP) for defeating enemies or performing actions recommended by law, which are used for special attacks and summoning.
Totema and Combos
JP is used to summon Totema or perform combo attacks, which involve allies joining the initiating unit's attack using all of its JP.
Keep an Ear Out for Rumors!
Valuable information can be heard from rumors in city pubs, so check there when you encounter something new in the game.
Going Shopping
Shops in Ivalice cities offer various items with different goods and prices, and shopkeepers are of different races.
Know the Lay of the Land!
Units in water panels can only wait and have reaction abilities negated, though they can move again on the next turn.
Losing
If Marche is taken out of action or sent to prison, the game is over immediately.
Prison Exemptions?
Certain enemy units protected by law cannot be removed from battle and are identified by a ribbon they wear.
Customize your gaming environment!
You can set options to customize the game, including Color Mode to match your hardware: LCD A for Game Boy Advance, LCD B for Game Boy Advance SP, and TV for Game Boy Player on Nintendo GameCube.
