Lunark is set on a desolate planet controlled by a ruthless government. The story follows Leo, a troubled courier with a mysterious past, who's plagued by a degenerative disease that accelerates his ageing process. After a shocking turn of events, he's forced to embark on a perilous journey to uncover the truth about himself.
The game features 12 levels, each with unique environments and puzzles to solve. Players navigate through a dystopian world, including a cityscape, laboratory, alien forest, and lunar nightclub, among others. The gameplay is deliberate and methodical, with an emphasis on problem-solving. While the pace may be slow, the challenges are engaging, drawing inspiration from classic platformers of the 90s.
Leo's combat mechanics allow for a mix of melee attacks and gunplay. The gun has infinite ammo, but requires reloading periodically. As players progress, they'll unlock permanent stat boosts that enhance Leo's abilities and the gun's power. Dodging enemies and using strategic timing is crucial to survival, while also managing health through the discovery of restorative flowers. Shields offer temporary protection from harm.
