About

In the Shadow Man franchise (1999), the character is Michael LeRoi, a voodoo warrior who protects the lives of the living from threats originating in Deadside. In the 1989 platformer Prince of Persia (and its 1992 ports), the Shadow Man is a magical, silent doppelgänger of the Prince created by a magic mirror.
Jordan Mechner designed the Prince of Persia doppelgänger using rotoscoped animation, creating a haunting visual counterpart that players could not defeat through standard combat. Instead, resolving the encounter required sheathing the sword and merging with the entity, a narrative and gameplay puzzle that influenced future cinematic platformers. This character reappeared in various ports, including the 1992 Super NES version, which expanded his role with additional boss encounters.
In the Acclaim Entertainment franchise, the character transitioned to 3D action-adventure gaming with the release of Shadow Man in 1999. Adapted from the Valiant Comics series, the game was released across Nintendo 64, PC, PlayStation, and Dreamcast. This iteration utilized a dual-world mechanic, allowing players to traverse the land of the living and the dead using voodoo weaponry and the Shadow Gun. Acclaim followed this with a 2002 sequel, Shadow Man: 2econd Coming, on the PlayStation 2. The original 1999 title achieved cult status, leading to a remastered edition by Nightdive Studios in 2021 that restored cut levels and updated the engine for modern platforms.
