APh Technological Consulting was contracted by Mattel to create the system software and early library for the Intellivision console. They developed foundational titles such as Armor Battle, Auto Racing, Baseball, and Football, laying the groundwork for franchises like NFL Football. The firm was also responsible for developing landmark Intellivision games like Star Strike and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
In 1978, the firm delivered
Baseball and
Football, which established the simulation-oriented gameplay style that would define the
NFL Football franchise. The following year saw a rapid expansion of their portfolio with the releases of
Checkers (1979),
Adventure (1979), and
ABPA Backgammon (1979), showcasing the hardware's capability for artificial intelligence and complex board game adaptations.
During this same 1979 period, the development of
Auto Racing and
Armor Battle pushed the system's capabilities in physics and multiplayer interaction. The technical expertise gained from these early projects culminated in the sophisticated assembly code required for the pseudo-3D perspective of
Star Strike and the cooperative, multi-screen quest design of
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Operating from Pasadena, California, the firm's engineers—many of whom were students or graduates of the California Institute of Technology—worked under strict anonymity policies, yet their pioneering programming techniques established the design standards for these major intellectual properties.
