Grandprix Inc. is a game development studio recognized for its work on boxing titles, particularly those based on the Hajime no Ippo manga franchise. They developed Victorious Boxers (2000), its sequel Victorious Boxers 2: Fighting Spirit (2004), and Hajime no Ippo Portable: Victorious Spirits (2007). The studio also worked on other titles such as Power Punch (2010) and the video game adaptation of the animated film Rio (2011).
The developer's early reputation was established through the sophisticated physics engine of
Victorious Boxers, which eschewed traditional health bars in favor of real-time facial damage and stamina depletion. This design philosophy, created in close consultation with manga author George Morikawa, aimed to replicate the tactical depth of professional boxing. The control system utilized analog inputs to simulate realistic upper-body movement and dodging, a mechanic that became a signature of the franchise.
With
Victorious Boxers 2: Fighting Spirit, the studio expanded the narrative scope, incorporating dozens of playable characters and a comprehensive story mode spanning multiple arcs from the source material. The technical transition to handheld hardware with
Hajime no Ippo Portable: Victorious Spirits required optimizing these complex physics for the PlayStation Portable, introducing local wireless multiplayer battles to the series.
In its later years, the studio diversified its output beyond Japanese sports properties. The release of
Power Punch brought simplified, motion-controlled boxing to the Wii console. This was followed by
Rio, a multiplayer party game featuring rhythm and action mini-games designed to align with the theatrical release of the animated movie.
