Moss Co., Ltd. is a Japanese development studio that took over the development of the iconic Raiden scrolling shooter franchise from Seibu Kaihatsu. The company developed Raiden III and Raiden IV across various arcade and home console releases. Additionally, they developed the action game Hero, which was released on the PlayStation Portable.
Founded by former industry veterans, the studio focused on preserving the legacy of classic shoot 'em ups while transitioning the genre into 3D graphics. The company's early work on its celebrated shooter series includes the release of
Raiden III (2000) and its subsequent major launch of
Raiden III (2005) for arcades and the PlayStation 2. This was followed by further ports, including
Raiden III (2007) for Windows PC, which introduced the gameplay to a wider global audience.
Expanding their portfolio beyond shoot 'em ups, the developer created the action game
Hero (2005) and its portable counterpart
Hero [UMD] (2005) for the PlayStation Portable, showcasing their versatility in handheld game design.
Returning to their flagship shooter series, the studio produced
Raiden IV (2008) for the Xbox 360, which refined the franchise's signature vertical-scrolling mechanics. This release was supported by the highly collectible
Raiden IV [Limited Edition] (2009), which bundled soundtrack CDs and other memorabilia for enthusiasts, alongside the standard release of
Raiden IV (2009) for broader home console markets.
