T&E Soft is a Japanese developer that created the influential Hydlide action RPG series, including Hydlide Special, Hydlide, and Super Hydlide. The studio also pioneered early 3D sports titles with their New 3D Golf Simulation series, which includes Harukanaru Augusta, Waialae No Kiseki, and Pebble Beach Golf Links. Additionally, they developed the shoot 'em up Undeadline.
Founded in 1982 by brothers Toshiro and Eiji Yokoyama, the studio initially gained prominence on Japanese home computers. The release of
Hydlide Special (1986) on the Famicom and the subsequent Western release of
Hydlide (1989) introduced console players to open-world exploration and regenerating health. This design philosophy evolved with
Super Hydlide (1989/1990), which incorporated a day-night cycle, weight limits, and a morality system.
In the sports genre, the developer leveraged proprietary 3D rendering techniques. The
New 3D Golf Simulation franchise, often localized as the
True Golf Classics or
Wicked 18 series, set new standards for realism. Titles like
Harukanaru Augusta (1991),
New 3D Golf Simulation: Waialae No Kiseki (1992), and
Pebble Beach Golf Links (1992) utilized step-by-step screen drawing to simulate undulating terrain and precise ball physics, capturing authentic layouts of famous real-world courses.
The studio also experimented with genre-blending in
Undeadline (1991), a fantasy-themed shoot 'em up featuring character classes and leveling systems. Through these releases, the company established a reputation for technical innovation on 8-bit and 16-bit hardware before transitioning to 32-bit platforms and eventually undergoing corporate restructuring in the 2000s.
