Founded in 1995, tri-Ace Inc. established its reputation with the release of Star Ocean in 1996 and its sequel Star Ocean: The Second Story in 1999. The studio expanded its portfolio with the critically acclaimed Valkyrie Profile in 1999 and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time in 2003. They also developed the lesser-known racing game Charinko Hero for the GameCube in 2003.
Originating from a core group of developers who departed Wolf Team, the studio transitioned their experience with active battle systems into the foundational mechanics of the
Star Ocean and
Valkyrie Profile franchises. Partnering with publisher Enix, the developer focused on real-time combat innovations and intricate sci-fi and fantasy world-building.
The release of
Valkyrie Profile [Limited Deluxe Pack] (1999) alongside the standard
Valkyrie Profile (1999) showcased a unique blend of Norse mythology, side-scrolling exploration, and combo-heavy tactical combat, which reached Western audiences with the localized
Valkyrie Profile (2000). Meanwhile, the developer pushed technological boundaries on the PlayStation 2. Although early iterations of
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (2000) began during the console's launch era, the project culminated in the highly anticipated
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (2003), introducing fully 3D environments and real-time combat fields to the series. Beyond these flagship role-playing intellectual properties, the studio briefly diversified its output with the whimsical racing title
Charinko Hero (2003), demonstrating a versatility that complemented their reputation for complex, system-driven role-playing games.
