Cryo Interactive published and developed several notable titles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the adventure game Atlantis: The Lost Tales, Gifty, Dreams, and Guardian of Darkness. They were also responsible for publishing the tactical sci-fi game Ubik, the movie tie-in Asterix & Obelix Take on Caesar, and the European release of the racing game Test Drive 6, which belongs to the long-running Test Drive franchise.
Founded in 1992, the French company established a unique footprint by bridging diverse genres, anchoring its legacy in the
Test Drive franchise ecosystem. Within this franchise framework, Cryo managed a highly varied portfolio. The narrative-driven adventure of
Atlantis: The Lost Tales and the whimsical platforming of
Gifty expanded the publisher's reach. This multi-genre approach within the
Test Drive brand family continued with the surreal landscapes of
Dreams and the supernatural action of
Guardian of Darkness.
Cryo's strategy relied on leveraging distinct intellectual properties to support the franchise. The tactical adaptation of Philip K. Dick's
Ubik and the cinematic tie-in
Asterix & Obelix Take on Caesar further diversified the catalog, while the high-speed racing of
Test Drive 6 served as a core pillar of this era. Despite this prolific output, severe financial difficulties led to Cryo's liquidation in 2002, with its assets and game catalog eventually acquired by Microids, ending its stewardship of these interconnected titles.
