Culture Brain, originally founded as Nihon Game, is a Japanese publisher and developer active during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. They are best known for developing the martial arts series Hiryuu no Ken, localized in the West as Kung Fu Heroes, and the action-RPG Arabian Dream Scheherazade (The Magic of Scheherazade). They also created the Choujin: Ultra Baseball franchise, which was released in North America as Baseball Simulator 1.000.
The company's early success on the Nintendo Entertainment System and Famicom was cemented by
Hiryuu no Ken: Ougi no Sho (1987), which introduced unique combat mechanics combining traditional side-scrolling action with tactical, target-based boss battles. This martial arts gameplay reached European audiences through the release of
KUNG FU (1987). In North America, the franchise gained traction with the release of
Kung Fu Heroes (1989), establishing a distinct multiplayer beat-'em-up style.
Simultaneously, the company expanded into role-playing games with
Arabian Dream Scheherazade (1987) in Japan, followed by its heavily modified Western counterpart,
The Magic of Scheherazade (1989). This title was notable for blending real-time action with turn-based tactical combat and time-travel mechanics.
In the sports genre, the release of
Choujin: Ultra Baseball (1989) introduced supernatural power-ups to sports simulations, a concept preserved in the North American localization
Baseball Simulator 1.000 (1990). The company also launched the
Ninja Boy (1990) spin-off series, known in Japan as
Super Chinese, which combined action-RPG elements with cooperative gameplay, solidifying their reputation for genre-blending titles during this period.
