Created by Kazunori Yamauchi, the series is designed to mimic the appearance and performance of a large selection of real-world vehicles. It is celebrated for its realistic physics, detailed graphics, and extensive licensed car rosters. Since its debut in 1997, it has become one of the best-selling franchises under the PlayStation brand.
Development began in 1992 under the Polyphony Digital studio, originally known as Polys Entertainment. The franchise established its foundation with the release of
Gran Turismo (1997) in Japan, which was followed by regional variations and special editions including
Gran Turismo [The Best] (1997). The game expanded globally the following year with
Gran Turismo (1998) in North America and Europe. This launch period saw various promotional and collectible releases, such as
Gran Turismo [Limited Edition] (1998),
Gran Turismo [Demo Disc] (1998),
Gran Turismo [Promo Only] (1998), and the budget-range re-release
Gran Turismo [Platinum] (1998).
Over subsequent console generations, the series introduced structured campaign modes, license tests, and online multiplayer. It also pioneered the GT Academy, a collaboration with Nissan that transitioned skilled virtual players into professional real-world racing careers. The franchise has expanded to include major numbered sequels and spin-offs, influencing the racing game genre by establishing the "sim-cade" subgenre and partnering with global automotive manufacturers for exclusive concept car designs.
