The Midway Arcade Treasures series is a trilogy of retro video game compilations that brought classic Williams, Atari, and Midway arcade titles to modern consoles. The series includes the original Midway Arcade Treasures (2003), Midway Arcade Treasures 2, and the racing-focused Midway Arcade Treasures 3. These compilations preserved and emulated dozens of historical arcade games for platforms like the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC.
Development of the franchise built upon earlier emulation packages like the
Midway Arcade Greatest Hits line. The initial 2003 release,
Midway Arcade Treasures, featured over twenty classic titles, accompanied by bonus historical content, developer interviews, and archival footage. A promotional variant,
Midway Arcade Treasures [Not for Resale], was distributed as a pack-in bundle. The sequel,
Midway Arcade Treasures 2, shifted focus toward mature-rated and multiplayer-centric titles from the late 1980s and 1990s, such as
Mortal Kombat II and
NARC. The third installment,
Midway Arcade Treasures 3, focused on 3D driving titles, utilizing emulation of the Sega Dreamcast architecture for several of its inclusions.
Digital Eclipse handled the emulation for the first volume, while Backbone Entertainment developed the subsequent entries. The series served as a crucial bridge in game preservation, offering players pixel-perfect ports and customizable control schemes. Later compilations, such as
Midway Arcade Origins, eventually succeeded this franchise, but the original releases remain highly regarded for their extensive bonus materials and comprehensive game selection.
