Phantasy Star Online is a subseries of Sega's Phantasy Star franchise, developed by Sonic Team. Starting with the release of Phantasy Star Online in 2000, the series became a pioneer in console online gaming. It expanded with releases like Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II and the tactical spin-off Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution.
The subseries originated from Sega's desire to create a multiplayer-focused role-playing game. Following the initial launch of
Phantasy Star Online (2000) on the Dreamcast, the game received updated versions and ports, including
Phantasy Star Online (2001) and
Phantasy Star Online (2002) for platforms like the GameCube, Xbox, and PC. These iterations refined the hack-and-slash gameplay, character customization, and lobby systems that defined the multiplayer experience.
The narrative expanded significantly with
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II (2002) and its updated re-release
Phantasy Star Online: Episode I & II (2003), which compiled the original game's content alongside a brand-new campaign featuring new environments, enemies, and rare loot. The franchise's history also encompasses unique database listings and early conceptual iterations, such as the legacy titles
Phantasy Star Online [Versus] (1993) and
Phantasy Star Online III Card Revolution [Prima] (1993). Players navigated the world of Ragol as Hunters, Rangers, or Forces, collaborating in four-player parties to defeat the ancient evil Dark Falz. The series established a template for cooperative action role-playing games, influencing modern online multiplayer design through its simple keyboard-free communication systems and instanced dungeon crawling.
