Blue Stinger is set in 2000, where a massive earthquake hits the Yucatan Peninsula region of Mexico, resulting in the emergence of an unknown island from the ocean. The government cordons off the island and dispatches an investigative task force to investigate the island's crater, which was created by a giant meteor 65 million years ago. The island is named Dinosaur Island , and highly classified research is conducted there for 17 years by the biotech corporation Kimra.
The game follows Eliot Ballade, an elite member of Kimra's Dinosaur Island ESER, as he discovers a mysterious dome of energy appearing from the center of the island after a meteor falls from the sky. As Eliot investigates, he uncovers an uncontrollable madness unleashed by the meteor and pieces together a horrifying revelation that could lead to the end of life on Earth.
Players control either Eliot Ballade or Dogs Bower as they navigate through seven areas and 230 locations, solving puzzles, avoiding hazards, and discovering items. The player can switch between characters at any time to utilize their different skills. Along the way, they will encounter situations where they can rescue someone or perform other tasks, receiving new weapons or items upon completion.
Blue Stinger controls like a Survival Horror game but with Action elements. The player is encouraged to engage enemies, as they drop coins that can be used to purchase health packs, new weapons, and ammo. Enemies respawn in most locations, allowing for infinite coin collection. The player must use health packs in real-time, taking care of their character while eating or drinking.
The game features a fully open island to explore, with some backtracking required as new items are found or developments are reached. Bosses are encountered regularly, and puzzles are mostly minor, find-the-item variety. Environmental hazards appear, but the game does not delve into Platformer territory.
The Japanese version of Blue Stinger featured a camera system intended to provide a suspenseful experience, while the US and European releases used a behind-the-back third-person angle.
