Monkeyshines! is an action-packed game for two players on the Magnavox Odyssey 2, where the objective is to tag as many monkeys as possible while avoiding being tagged back. Players can move and jump over platforms to reach the monkeys, which are hanging around. Catching a monkey requires pressing the "action" button to tag it and throw it in any desired direction. Once tagged, the monkey becomes red for a short time and tries to tag the player back.

The game's difficulty level increases as more monkeys are tagged, making it harder for players to avoid being caught. If over 10 monkeys are tagged, the game gets increasingly challenging with longer-lasting tags. Players can skip levels by pressing "+" once (for the second level) or twice (for the third). Several variations of gameplay are available, including Tailspin!, Shuteye!, Monkey Chess!, and Bananas!, which introduce additional challenges and features.

Gameplay includes features such as platform randomization, invisible platforms, and the ability to edit the playfield in Monkey Chess!. The computer tracks the number of monkeys tagged, and the game ends when both player characters are caught. Players can experience a range of challenges and variations, making for a fun and engaging gameplay experience.
