The LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game for Nintendo 3DS is similar to its console counterpart, but with simpler graphics and a unique dueling mechanic. Players can play through events of the four Pirates of the Caribbean films, tied in with the release of On Stranger Tides . Cutscenes are partly reused, partly newly done to fit the design of the handheld version.
The game follows the standard template of earlier LEGO games: players move through levels playing as several characters with different abilities. To defeat enemies and solve puzzles, their skills must be combined. Collecting LEGO studs, bricks, and other items allows for unlocking bonuses. A unique feature is pirate duels, where players press a button rapidly, followed by a quick-time event to hit two out of three indicated buttons for a successful strike.
Multiplayer functionality is available on the 3DS version, including the support of 3DS StreetPass for collecting Play Coins. These coins can be spent to buy characters, which can then be used in pirate duels against other 3DS users, with the winner earning more Play Coins.
