Crypt of the NecroDancer is a roguelike dungeon crawler with a pixel art visual style and shown from an elevated, almost top-down view. The game has classic elements like exploring, gathering loot, and defeating enemies, but its gameplay is based on matching the music's beat to make actions more effective.
The player controls their character using movement keys or buttons, which also determine when they attack. Enemies move according to the beat as well, each with unique patterns that need to be identified. If the player misses a beat, it loses a coin multiplier bonus, making it harder to collect currency. The game has a fast-paced feel, similar to a turn-based game where both the player and enemies act simultaneously.
Typical roguelike elements include permadeath, randomized environments, and items that change with each session. There's two currencies: basic coins for buying items in a shopkeeper, and diamonds which are gathered across sessions and can be used to access permanent perks. The game has many characters to unlock, each with their own abilities, zones, and multiple game modes.
The PC version allows players to create and share new levels using a level editor. The game also features daily challenges, local cooperative play with a second player on the same screen, a story mode, and four zones with four levels each. The story follows Cadence, who has gone missing in the crypt of the NecroDancer, as she tries to defeat her dad's rival and his minions.
