Ubisoft has brought its Tom Clancy franchise to the Nintendo 3DS with Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars , a strategic game that fills a gap in the market for turn-based titles. By positioning itself between Nintendo's own Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series, Ubisoft is offering players a fresh alternative.
The story of Shadow Wars revolves around a sinister plot by ultra-nationalist conspirators to re-establish the Iron Curtain in Russia. The Ghost Recon team must intervene to put an end to this threat, with each member possessing unique abilities that can be utilized strategically to overcome challenges. With six playable classes - Commando, Gunner, Sniper, Recon, Engineer, and Medic - players must learn to master their skills to succeed. Missions often feature multiple objectives, allowing for varying levels of difficulty to be selected beforehand.
The gameplay in Shadow Wars takes place from an overhead perspective, with limited camera adjustments available. Players control the team using the d-pad and buttons, while the bottom screen displays stats and specific details about the game world. Characters have limited health and ammo, but each character can carry two weapons or items.
The game features several additional modes beyond its regular campaign. Skirmish mode provides standalone missions against computer opponents, with three difficulty levels to choose from. Completing objectives earns players PEC points and stars, which can be used to upgrade characters' attributes. A multiplayer mode is also available, allowing for turn-based strategy gameplay on a single 3DS system.
