The story of Tales of Phantasia follows Cless, a young boy living in a quiet village with his parents. One day, while hunting with his friend Chester, Cless discovers a mysterious talking tree that begs for help. After a brief conversation, the two friends return to their village to find it burnt down and its inhabitants murdered. The event seems connected to a pendant given to Cless by his parents on his birthday.
The gameplay of Tales of Phantasia is centered around action-based combat on separate side-scrolling screens. The player controls one character directly, while AI controls the other party members. The game allows pausing at any time to use magic, items, or choose a strategy for the allies.
