Wings of Fury is an action game with simulation aspects, where you play as the pilot of an American F6F Hellcat plane during World War II in the Pacific. Your goal is to defeat the Japanese by destroying enemy bunkers, machine gun nests, and barracks on a series of islands.
Gameplay involves using regular bombs to destroy barracks and gun nests, while rockets are needed to take out concrete bunkers. After a successful bombing run, you'll need to engage in dogfights with enemy fighter planes and sink Japanese battleships with torpedoes. You must also protect your aircraft carrier from Japanese attacks.
Each mission starts with taking off from the carrier, which you'll need to defend against enemy torpedo planes. If you run out of fuel, bombs, rockets, or machine gun ammo, you can replenish these resources by returning to the carrier, where you can also repair damage to your plane.
The Wings of Fury game for Commodore 64 has a more realistic approach, while the Gameboy Color version has been toned down in terms of violence. In this version, you'll be bombing jeeps and trucks instead of killing Japanese soldiers. Other changes include the absence of Japanese torpedo planes and a smaller first-person view window.
In both versions, you can perform extra manoeuvres with your plane, such as a barrel roll, and receive bonus points for using less ammo than allocated after each mission.
