Twisted Metal is a racing game that features destructive car combat. Players can choose to compete in a tournament or play a single match. The action takes place in eight different locations around the world, each with its own unique surface and features like destructible buildings and landmarks.

In this game, players can control a wide range of vehicles, from cars to trucks to even an ice cream truck. Each vehicle has its strengths and weaknesses, and they're equipped with various weapons like bombs and missiles. The outcome of the combat determines the end sequence, which often includes humorous one-liners.

Extracted from the original game manual

This is a vehicular combat game where players compete in a deadly tournament across various Los Angeles locations. You drive weaponized vehicles, battling other contestants in destructive arenas to be the last one standing and claim any prize you desire.



Story

Prologue

You remember that night six months ago. An email from CALYPSO arrived, promising your greatest fantasy. The message, flashing in red, simply said: WILL YOU DRIVE?

Once a year, Calypso, a man dwelling beneath the streets of LA, holds the TWISTED METAL competition. Vehicles of every kind battle to the death across the Los Angeles area. The last driver alive is granted any request, any prize.

There are no limits on price, size, or even reality. Your special invitation from Calypso gives you the chance to battle in Twisted Metal.

This is where your skills, luck, and guts are tested. Life and death decisions occur every instant, and the Grim Reaper lurks around every corner. This is where your ultimate dream can come true. Welcome to the big time...WELCOME TO TWISTED METAL!

Battlegrounds

Twisted Metal takes place all over the streets of LA. There are many areas to fight in and explore. This is not an ordinary racing game; there are NO TRACKS! Go where you want, when you want.

ARENA LEVEL: Calypso's Nightclub

It's 3 in the morning and the city is wide awake! Welcome to Calypso's Nightclub, an underground arena where you and a single enemy face off for the right to compete in the contest!

OUTLAW WAREHOUSE DISTRICT WARFARE

Calypso's Nightclub spills out onto the streets where you and 3 enemies go head to head in the warehouse district of downtown LA.

FREEWAY FREE FOR ALL

Gunfights on the LA Freeways? Live out a reality that most LA Drivers experience EVERY DAY! Blast 5 opponents to South Central and back in this fast paced level!

DARKSIDE RIVER PARK RUMBLE

Welcome to Beverly Hills! Try to take down 6 enemy vehicles while the 'beautiful people' run for cover! Ya know, come to think of it, take down some of the beautiful people while you're at it!

CYBURBIA

The biggest level of the Twisted Metal contest. Go crazy in school parking lots, battle it out in front of convenience stores, even fight your way past a church! Whoever said video games were violent...they were right!!! 8 deadly enemies in this level!

ROOFTOP COMBAT

The rooftops of LA's tallest skyscrapers serve as the battle ground for Twisted Metal's final battle! Shoot and shove 3 enemies into submission, then go head to head with MINION, the winner of last year's Twisted Metal. If you win this level, you win the contest and get to claim your ultimate fantasy...

Items & Weapons

HEALTH STATIONS

These blue ramps recharge a portion of your health when driven through. The amount replenished and recharge speed depend on the difficulty level.

MAXIMUM WEAPON CAPACITY

Every vehicle has these weakest weapons with unlimited ammunition, but they can overheat.

FIRE MISSILE

The stock weapon, these are standard projectile missiles with slight homing properties and decent damage.

Hitting an enemy with this missile freezes them in place for a few seconds, preventing them from attacking or moving. You can break out of a freeze by pressing turbo, but it will cost a full unit of turbo.

CATAPULTS

Drop these and drive over them for an extra bounce, useful for reaching high places or bouncing enemies into your line of fire.

REAR FLAME

A large column of flame that shoots out from the back of your car.

OIL SLICKS

Leaves a slick pool of oil that causes any car driving through it to slide and slip for a few seconds.
