Wolfenstein is an episodic first-person shooter and a follow-up to the top-down infiltration game Castle Wolfenstein. The game puts the player in the boots of B.J. Blazkowicz, an allied spy. There are six episodes: the first distributed completely as shareware; the second and the third available after registration; and the three final missions (which happen before the events of the first episode) available in the Nocturnal Missions pack. The game's story revolves around B.J.'s escape from Wolfenstein, where he must navigate through nine levels to reach Allied territory. Once there, he is given the instructions to Operation: Eisenfaust, a mission to stop Dr. Schabbs and his army of mutant prototypes before they are released into battlefields. The final mission involves infiltrating the bunker under the Reichstag and terminating Hitler himself.
The Nocturnal Missions focus on the Nazi plans for chemical warfare, with each episode featuring nine levels (eight regular and a final boss level) plus a secret level. Players must navigate through levels, killing enemies, collecting keys and treasures to progress, and activating "push walls" to unlock doors. The game features various objects and enemies, including medikits, ammo, and treasures for points, as well as different types of enemies such as Dogs, Army Soldiers, Officers, SS Troopers, and Mutants. The gameplay involves guiding B.J. through levels, killing enemies while avoiding them when possible, and collecting items to restore health or earn extra lives. The player has a limited number of lives, and can win extra lives by finding the 1-up item or reaching 20,000 points. With its challenging gameplay and engaging story, Wolfenstein offers a thrilling experience for players.
