The Master System version of Ninja Gaiden has a unique storyline that differs from the well-known NES game. The story follows Dragon ninja Ryu Hayabusa as he returns to his clan's village, only to find it destroyed and its inhabitants murdered. A survivor tells Ryu that the Sacred Scroll of Bushido was stolen, giving its owner immense power to control the world.
Ryu vows to recapture the scroll and avenge his clan's death. The gameplay involves side-scrolling platforming and beat-em-up mechanics, similar to the NES games. Ryu can jump, attack with his Dragon Sword, and collect Ninja Magic, such as shuriken and fire wheels, which have limited uses due to energy consumption.
A key innovation in this game is Ryu's ability to push himself off walls, allowing for more fluid movement and exploration. Players must use this mechanic to navigate levels, reaching the end before time runs out. Each level consists of several sections, culminating in a boss fight at the end. Defeating these bosses reveals cut scenes continuing Ryu's quest for the Bushido scroll and his revenge.
