Batman Returns, released for the Sega Master System by Aspect Co. Ltd., brings the 1992 superhero sequel to life in this side-scrolling platformer. Like other versions, it's very similar to the Game Gear adaptation, but with slightly different levels and gameplay mechanics. The game follows Batman as he navigates through five stages in his quest to defeat the Penguin. The stages take him through various locations of Gotham City, including its streets and rooftops, Max Shreck's department store, the sewers, and the Penguin's lair. Players can choose a route for the first four levels, offering alternative paths through the game.
Defeating enemies is made possible by throwing the Batarang at them. Initially, the Batarang's range is limited, but power-ups can be collected to expand its reach. Batman also has access to other tools, such as a grappling hook for navigating challenging areas and his cape, which serves as a parachute for greater control during falls.
One notable difference from the Game Gear version is the absence of a health bar. A single hit will result in Batman's demise. To compensate, the game provides an abundance of extra lives.
