The successful movie sequel Batman Returns spawned many different game adaptations. The Super Nintendo version presents the story of Batman's encounter with the Penguin and Catwoman as a side-scrolling beat 'em up, with one Batmobile driving sequence thrown in.
There are two varieties of beat 'em up levels. One plays like Final Fight: Batman can move in two dimensions, beating up his enemies with various punches, kicks, combos, and special moves. Special gadgets to be used include the famous Batarang to take out enemies from a distance and "Test Tubes" filled with chemical explosives which will damage all enemies on the screen.
In the second type of side-scrolling level, Batman can only move in one dimension, left or right. The Batarang is the standard weapon here, with punches only being used when the enemy gets close. Also in these levels, Batman can use a grappling hook to cross dangerous areas unharmed.
Enemies in the beat 'em up levels usually belong to the Penguin's Red Triangle Circus Gang - clowns in all varieties: thin clowns, fat clowns, clowns on bikes, clowns armed with bazookas, and more. At the end of each level, there is a boss fight, including several encounters with Catwoman and the Penguin.
In the Batmobile driving level, the action is viewed from behind. Batman has to evade clowns on bikes and shoot them down when he gets the chance. At the end of the road, another boss fight awaits.

*Havoc in Gotham Plaza* is an action-adventure game where players assume the role of Batman as he responds to a sudden, chaotic attack on Gotham City's holiday celebration by a gang of circus-themed thugs. After preparing his gear in the Batcave, the player must navigate through the streets of Gotham and into the plaza to defeat the armed criminals and restore peace. Players will engage in combat against various enemies, including motorcyclists and flame-breathing clowns, across multiple stages of action.
Story
Havoc in Gotham Plaza
Gotham City is in the midst of a jubilant holiday celebration. The mayor is giving his annual speech before the lighting of the Christmas tree in Gotham Plaza, when a huge gift box appears at the back of the plaza.
As the crowd quiets, the box erupts with the roar of powerful engines. Skull-masked motorcyclists, flame-breathing clowns, and knife-wielding acrobats storm the crowd, striking terror where moments before there had been glee.
Police Commissioner Gordon, on hand for the celebration, quickly sends word to the precinct headquarters to send the Bat-Signal.
The Call to Action
Miles away in Wayne Manor, Bruce Wayne looks up from his desk as a series of mechanized mirrors detects the Bat-Signal and reflects it through his window. His faithful butler, Alfred, enters the room to ask if he should prepare.
Wayne rolls up his sleeve, plunges his arm into a large aquarium in the center of the room, and presses a button on an ornamental castle. A secret panel opens behind him, revealing a passage to the hidden Batcave.
Preparing in the Batcave
Inside the Batcave, Alfred takes a seat at a bank of computer terminals while Bruce Wayne activates a console panel beside a large vault door. The vault opens to reveal a number of armored Batman suits and a vast array of high-tech weapons.
Alfred intercepts a local satellite feed of a newscast to assess the threat at the plaza:

Approximately twenty thugs wearing circus costumes with no sign of armor.
•
Weapons include knives, flame throwers, and possibly small arms.
•
Most enemies are on foot, with some on motorcycles.
The Mission Begins
Batman dons a suit of light armor with good flexibility. He instructs Alfred to link with the Batmobile and keep him apprised of the situation, planning to enter at ground level from the east side of the plaza.
Alfred starts the engine of the Batmobile via remote control. Batman leaps into the cockpit and speeds away to rescue Gotham City once again.

How to Play
Starting the Game
With the Super NES™ turned off, insert the game pak into the unit. Now turn the power on. You will see the game credits screen, followed by the introduction.
When you are ready to begin the game, press the START button. This will advance you to the game start screen. Use the control pad up/down to select either GAME START or OPTIONS.
The Streets of Gotham
In the first level of the first stage, you begin on the streets of Gotham City. The holiday crowd is being terrorized by the Red Triangle Circus Gang.
Fight off the thugs and make your way to the boss character at the end of the stage. You can use a variety of moves and weapons.
Batman's Gadgets
Batman has a few special gadgets up his sleeve—and on his utility belt. In many of the stages you can select a gadget to aid Batman in his fight against crime.
Using the Batarang
The Batarangs are modern day versions of the old boomarangs. Batman will whip these at his opponents when you pick the Batarang as the SELECTED ITEM.
•
Press the SELECT button to make the Batarang appear in the SELECT ITEM window.
•
Press the A button to throw.
Note: In some stages the default attack method will be the Batarang. That means that you don't have to select the item and press the A button. Simply press the Y button as you normally would to attack.
Using the Spear Gun
The spear gun is used to raise Batman's chances in a fight to new heights—literally. Batman can fire the spear gun straight or at 45 degree and 90 degree angles (in certain areas).
•
Make the spear gun the SELECT ITEM.
•
Press the control pad in the direction you want to shoot the spear gun, then press the A button.
•
The spear will stick into the wall or ceiling if possible. Press the A button again to retract the cable, thus pulling Batman along, or up.
•
Press the control pad down to release the cable.
•
In most areas the spear gun can be used to help Batman kick the enemies.
