The game's setting and style are reminiscent of the movie The Road Warrior ("Mad Max 2"). Your goal is to drive through the wasteland, trying to survive motorcycle gang members' attacks while avoiding running out of gas.
The gameplay splits between racing and side-scrolling. In the racing parts, you destroy enemies like motorcycle gang members, gyro-copter captains, red trucks, etc. With a machine-gun installed in your car, you can shoot them as they drive alongside you through a small window.
Outlander features several towns along the road, each with an alarm that warns you of impending danger. As your gas runs low, you must stop at these towns to refuel and restock on ammo. In these side-scrolling sections, you engage in hand-to-hand combat with enemies, acquiring new equipment for Outlander 's car, such as missile launchers and nitro.
