Sega GT Online is an online update of Sega GT 2002 , released on March 17, 2006, for the Xbox console. The game's story revolves around racing 165 cars from the 1950s to concept vehicles in either classic GT 2002 mode or against human players on Xbox Live.
In Sega GT Online , players must work their way up the ranks by purchasing cheaper cars and earning cash or prize cars to acquire better vehicles. The game introduces new parts, cars, and modified limited slip differential, while modifying prize money and prices. Additionally, new tracks have been added, including a facsimile of Laguna Seca, reverse tracks, and races set in different times of day.
Players can select from a variety of cars, from Chevilles to Fiat, and choose a track location, ranging from American deserts to European villages. The game features two new modes: Gathering mode with 30 checkpoints, license tests, and racing line challenges, as well as Chronicles mode. Completing each challenge unlocks a car for purchase in GT 2002 mode.
Online, players could participate in races against human opponents or trade parts with them. However, due to Xbox Live's shutdown, this mode is no longer accessible.
