The story of El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron takes place in a fantastical interpretation of biblical themes, inspired by the apocryphal Book of Enoch. God sends Enoch on a mission to capture angels that have fallen short of their duties to watch over humanity. These angels, called Grigori, became fascinated with humans and renounced Heaven to live among them. Enoch must navigate their realms, battle their aberrant Nephilim offspring, find the fallen angels, and bring them back to Heaven's fold.
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is a third-person action game that focuses on platforming and melee combat. The combat system relies heavily on button timing, allowing for light, heavy, and counterattacks. Enoch has no weapons of his own and must steal enemies' weapons via counterattacks. These weapons degrade over time and must be periodically purified or discarded for new ones. Combat occurs in arena-like encounters, followed by 3D exploration or 2D platforming. The game's art style is primarily watercolor-inspired, with each angel's realm having a distinct theme.
