In Last Remnant , the player controls Rush Sykes as he sets out to rescue his kidnapped sister. While chasing after the mysterious kidnappers, Rush gains the aid of the Four Generals of Athlum: Emma the Mitra, Torgal the Sovani, Blocter the Yama, and Pagus the Qsiti, as well as their ruler, Marquis David whose soul is bound to the magical artifact Gae Bolg. As the story unfolds, a more sinister plot of greater powers emerges.
Last Remnant is an RPG in the tradition of Final Fantasy and SaGa . The game's battle system features turn-based combat with large-scale battles where players control units of combatants. Units can be filled with main characters, special mercenary leaders, or generic soldiers, and battles involve melees and the use of "arts" - weapon, item, and magical proficiencies. Unit interaction plays a crucial role in combat, allowing for tactics such as blocking, assaulting, surrounding, and supporting enemy and friendly units.
The Xbox 360 version offers the choice between Japanese or English voice-overs, improved character animations, multiple leader units that can form unions, and a faster gameplay option during battles.
