X-Men: The Official Game is set between the second and third X-Men movies. In the game, the player controls Wolverine, Iceman, and Nightcrawler as they deal with the aftermath of the incident at Alkali Lake. The heroes return to Alkali Lake to recover two stolen Cerebro parts, but find an unknown organization conducting a salvage operation on the base.
The three playable characters have distinct fighting abilities. X-Men: The Official Game features Wolverine's fixed third-person view, Iceman's flying ability, and Nightcrawler's teleportation power. Each character is used to progress through levels, with unique challenges and enemy encounters.
